Turnage Talks with Dr. Maria Hammack

In honor and celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, we have teamed up with Building Integrated Communities/Latin-American and Caribbean Initiative, The Washington Project and The Underground Railroad Museum to bring you a Turnage Talk featuring Dr. Maria Hammack. Her talk is focusing on the Southern Underground Railroads: Stories of Black Liberation to Mexico and will be held at the Historic Turnage Theatre on October 7, 2023 at 11am. This opportunity to learn and engage with your community is completely free and open to the public. Everyone is encouraged and welcome to attend.
 
Dr. Hammack is a Mexican scholar and public historian whose work bridges the histories of liberation and abolition that shaped the US, Mexico, and Canada and how these connect to the larger Atlantic and Pacific worlds. Her first book, Channels of Liberation: Freedom Fighters in the Age of Abolitions reexamines the Underground Railroad to reconsider & broaden the actors, timelines, and geographies of Black Liberation in North America & the experiences of Black Americans who left the United States to claim freedom in Mexican spaces. María is an Assistant Professor of African American History at The Ohio State University.

Dr. María Hammack es una investigadora mexicana e historiadora pública, cuyo trabajo vincula las historias de liberación y abolición que le dieron forma a Estados Unidos, México, y Canadá; así como se dio la conexión entre los mundos del Pacífico y del Atlántico. En su primer libro, Canales de Liberación: Luchadores por la Libertad en la Época de las Aboliciones, reexamina el ferrocarril subterráneo para reconsiderar y expandir a los actores, las líneas del tiempo, las geografías de la liberación negra en América del Norte, y las experiencias de los americanos negros que dejaron Estados Unidos para reclamar su libertad en espacios mexicanos. María es Profesora Asistente de História Afrio-Américana en la Universidad del Estado de Ohio.
